The Pop Can Tab Miracle

Somebody started a bad joke. They claimed that the little pop can tab used to open a can of any soft drink could be used to buy wheelchairs for the disabled. It was a hoax. But two men in Elora turned this lie into truth. They began collecting pop can tabs and selling them to an aluminum smelter. For every 1,000 tabs they get 50 cents. In 11 years, 331 new wheelchairs have been donated. The most expensive one cost $8,500.

Now suppose that a person drinking a can of pop every day pays 30 cents for each can. If that person donated 19 cents a year to buy wheelchairs, they wouldn't have to bust off 365 pop can tabs. A very little donation would have produced the same result. By buying $109.50 worth of pop in a year, either saving the pop can tabs or giving 19 cents makes the same donation.

What is honest government based on Biblical principles honouring God worth to you? Can you contribute a portion of what God has given to you for the presentation of Christian principles in government? Please prayerfully consider a donation.

Of the first $100, 75% is returned to you through your Income Tax Return.

Of the next $450, 50% is returned to you.

Of the next $500, 33 1/3% is returned to you.

Please designate your cheque for the upcoming federal election if this is your preference.

Peter Ellis' Acceptance Speech as the Candidate for

Waterloo-Wellington Monday, May 15, 2000 Part II of II

What is the Role of the Christian Heritage Party Office?

Prophetic Umbrella Protective Functions PUP!

1. Prophetic Role - to other political parties, to the Canadian government and to society in general as a reminder of the Christian Heritage of this country. We provide a reminder of the righteous demands of Almighty God on men and nations. We present the declaration of a well thought out Biblically grounded, principled alternative politics. In this prophetic role we do not lust for political power. We are content to strive mightily and faithfully for righteousness sake and leave the results to a sovereign God. For example, Ron Gray at the Alternative Convention made a motion to support the preamble to Canada's Constitution that states "Canada was established on principles that recognize the sovereignty of God and the rule of law". The motion was supported by 24 out of 1500 delegates. Ron acted in a prophetic role like an Old Testament prophet. The prophetic role is never a popular one, but we are called to it.

2. Umbrella Role - The Christian Heritage Party provides an opportunity for Christians of many denominations to unite as a political party and offer their fellow Canadians a political program based on commonly held Biblical principles. Christian MP's in the secular parties have been frustrated for many years by the concept of party loyalty that forbids them to speak openly of their faith on the floor of the House of Commons. Paul says in 1st Corinthians 14, "If the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?" The Christian voice in Canadian government has long been compromised and silent. The Christian political trumpet is unmuzzled and unambiguous as Christian politicians and their supporters join together under the CHP banner.

3. Protective Role - We offer protection and a voice for the powerless of society: the unborn (and their mothers), the homeless, aged, prisoners, victims of crime and the handicapped. We are called by the God of the Judaeo-Christian scriptures to defend the weak against the strong. Take for example the severely handicapped, who are we to disparage their quality of life and see it as qualitatively different from our own? Many of our handicapped fellow Canadians feel vulnerable with talk of euthanasia in the air and highly publicized 'mercy killings' in the media. Some of our handicapped friends see the Christian Heritage Party of Canada as their last, best hope.

For a number of us, the most moving and significant part of the CHP Convention in Vancouver, November 1998 was the presentation by Marilyn and Sylvia. These two bright vivacious young women have bodies that have not developed properly. Their bone structures are brittle, leading to many fractures. (One of them gave up counting after 240 fractures!) These ladies enjoy every moment of their God-given life to the full. One is a Teacher's Aid. They are wanting to travel and tell their story. I hope that we might have them at a future CHP Conference in Ontario. But their big fear is that a doctor will some day play God and decide that they are not worth resuscitating. They say that the Christian Heritage Party is the last, best hope of the handicapped. The role or function, therefore, of the CHP is to be a Prophet providing Christians with a unified, uncompromised political vehicle and it is to act for the protection of those without power.
